The way you’ve been treated for health ailments has always been to treat the place that, well, “ails” you. If you complain of acid reflux, you’re given a medication that inhibits stomach acid production. If you have constant diarrhea, you’re given an anti-diarrhea medication. However, this method of treatment is changing. And those of us practicing health coaching are at the forefront. Looking at our gut health as a source to many of our common diseases will lead to a healthier nation.
The new frontier of health care is in our guts and also in Functional Medicine. Functional Medicine is the concept that takes the patients entire story into consideration. For example, if you complain of chronic diarrhea, you’ll be asked questions that will reach back into your childhood, how you were born (vaginally or by c-section), your environment that you live in, your sleep patterns and more. Why is this? Because Functional Medicine is about the WHOLE PERSON, not just the complaint. All of these factors influence your health, even if we have thought for centuries that they are not connected. FM looks at all influencing factors on the patient, not just at the source of disease. It makes sense, doesn’t it? To pursue the whole person as a patient, rather than just the disease?! Our gut health is at the center of it all.
Because of this approach there are more and more studies being released on how your gut health effects much more than just your gut. I found this recent study on how improving the gut microbes of autistic individuals greatly improved behavior. Plus this article that sites several studies linking our nutrition to ADHD behavior. These studies found that dye has devastating effects on our kids and was linked to behavioral issues. Think of the last time your kids drank a “fruit punch”….do you think its that red or orange color naturally? Or did the beverage get a little help from food coloring? What about preservatives? Yikes! And the studies just keep on coming.
The new frontier of medicine lies in our gut health and in Functional Medicine. Good nutrition is the source of great health. I have seen this first hand with my clients as well as within my own family. I believe that those with chronic symptoms (such as IBS, acid reflux, chronic constipation) can benefit greatly by conducting an elimination diet and going through the process of identifying what foods inflame their bodies. The most common inflammatory culprits are dairy, gluten, soy, corn and sugar.
These are exciting times! As we observe the horrendous health of our country and the skyrocketing disease in our young people we can finally see a light through this new frontier. Try it for yourself! The beauty of this “new medicine” is that you can help yourself right in your own home with an elimination diet and proper supplements.
